Scotland's firework rules are tighter than England's

The Fireworks (Scotland) Regulations 2004 and the Fireworks and Pyrotechnic Articles (Scotland) Act 2022 apply in Edinburgh. Read this before you order.

The 6pm-to-11pm window

In Scotland you can only set off fireworks between 6pm and 11pm on most nights, rather than the 7am-to-11pm window in England. The limit moves to midnight on 5 November and to 1am on New Year's Eve, Diwali and Chinese New Year.

Edinburgh's Firework Control Zones

City of Edinburgh Council runs Firework Control Zones in parts of the city from 30 October to 8 November 2026. Inside a zone you can't set off fireworks while it's in force, even in your own garden. You can still buy fireworks and have them delivered there. Check the council's website for the current zone map before you plan a display.

Storage, age, public land

Store fireworks somewhere cool, dry and locked, out of children's reach and in the maker's packaging, for up to 48 days from delivery without an explosives licence. You must be 18 or over to buy F2 or F3 fireworks. You can't set them off on public land, such as parks, streets or beaches, without permission from whoever runs it. Safety distances are 8 metres for F2 and 25 metres for F3.

Fireworks in Edinburgh and the Lothians

Hogmanay is Edinburgh's biggest fireworks night, and Scottish law lets you fire until 1am that night. Bonfire Night comes second. The city's organised November shows have thinned out: the old Meadowbank display ended with the stadium redevelopment, and the Myreside fireworks won't run in 2026 after fifteen years.

Fireworks for Edinburgh gardens. Tenement flats in Leith, Gorgie, Marchmont and Bruntsfield usually share a back green, so check with your neighbours first and stick to fountains, small cakes and our low-noise range. Bigger gardens in Barnton, Colinton, Balerno or out in East Lothian can often take F3 display packs, which need 25 metres of clear space between the firing point and the audience. Ring 01709 769 184 or email us a photo if you're not sure.

Have a look at the low-noise range first if you're in a built-up area, or jump straight to the cake and barrage section if you've got the space. Rockets, fountains, sparklers and complete display packs are all in the main range too.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you deliver fireworks to Edinburgh?

Yes. We deliver to every EH postcode plus Musselburgh, Dalkeith, Penicuik, Livingston and East Lothian. Enter your postcode at checkout and you'll see your delivery date and price. If you live inside one of the city's Firework Control Zones, you can still buy and receive fireworks, but you can't set them off in the zone while it's in force.

What time can I set off fireworks in Edinburgh?

In Scotland, fireworks can only be set off between 6pm and 11pm on most nights. The limit moves to midnight on 5 November and to 1am on New Year's Eve, Diwali and Chinese New Year. Firework Control Zone rules apply on top of that, so check the council map if you're in one of the zones.

What happens on delivery day?

Our ADR-trained driver will send you a 2-hour delivery window. They'll help you offload your fireworks and put them somewhere safe, such as a porch, garage, shed or outbuilding. Please give a safe place at checkout: if nobody is in and there's nowhere safe to leave them, the delivery fails and redelivery costs £29.95.

Can I click and collect instead?

Yes, from any of our three shops: Dinnington near Sheffield (12-14 Hangsman Lane, S25 3PF, 01909 560011), Ripley in Derbyshire (54 Oxford Street, DE5 3AP, 01773 513388) and Retford in Nottinghamshire (8 Grove Street, DN22 6JR, 01777 869111). They're a long way from Edinburgh, so most of our Edinburgh customers order for delivery. Retford is a seasonal shop, so check its hours before you travel.

How long can I store fireworks at home?

You can store fireworks at home for up to 48 consecutive days without a storage licence. Keep them somewhere cool and dry, away from heat, out of reach of children and pets, and in their original packaging.

Do you deliver to my exact postcode in Edinburgh?

Enter your postcode at checkout to see your delivery date and cost. Your postcode sets the price. North of Glasgow, North East Scotland and the Highlands are classed as remote and cost more. If you have a question about your address, email help@galacticfireworks.co.uk or call 01709 769 184.
