Sparklers
Buy Sparklers Online — Coloured, Giant, Long & Crackling Sparklers
Looking to buy sparklers? You're in the right place. Our sparkler range starts from just 89p and includes coloured sparklers, giant 18" sparklers, long sparklers for weddings, and bulk packs for events. Every sparkler we sell is Category F1, low-noise, and safe for supervised use by older children — the most accessible firework there is.
Coloured sparklers are our most popular line. Unlike traditional gold sparklers, coloured versions burn in shades of red, green, blue, purple and more. They are available individually and in bulk packs, making them practical for parties, events and wedding receptions. Multi-coloured packs offer a mix of colours in a single bundle.
Giant 18" sparklers — also known as long sparklers — burn for 60-90 seconds compared to 30-40 seconds for standard 10" versions. The extra length creates more dramatic light trails for long-exposure photography. Wedding sparklers are often giant length for this reason, giving photographers enough time to capture sparkler arch shots and group photos. If you need long sparklers for a wedding send-off, our 18" Mammoth Sparklers are the go-to choice.
Buying sparklers in bulk? We stock case deals from 40 to 1,500 units with discounts up to 68% off RRP — ideal for weddings, Bonfire Night events, birthday parties, and corporate celebrations. Sparklers pair well with other firework types. Use them as a warm-up before lighting cakes or rockets, or hand them out after a complete display as a finale activity. They also complement fountains and ice fountains for indoor-to-outdoor transitions at events. Orders over £300 qualify for free delivery.

Birthday Sparklers
Birthday sparklers add a focal point to any birthday celebration, whether it's a child's garden party or a milestone 50th. Standard 10-inch birthday sparklers are the practical choice — they're short enough for younger children (with adult supervision) to hold comfortably and burn for 30–40 seconds. Coloured sparklers are especially popular at birthday parties because they burn in reds, greens, blues, and purples rather than the standard gold.
For a birthday cake sparkler effect indoors, standard sparklers are not suitable — they burn far too hot and produce sparks that will land on food and surfaces. Instead, use ice fountains, which are specifically designed for indoor use on cakes and tables. Ice fountains give a controlled silver fountain effect at a much lower temperature and are the product most people are actually looking for when they search for "birthday cake sparklers."
If the birthday party is outdoors, sparklers work well as an activity between other entertainment. Hand them out alongside fountains for a garden display, or use them as a warm-up before lighting cakes and barrages. For large birthday gatherings, our bulk sparkler packs bring the per-unit cost down significantly — as low as 17p each.
Sparkler Safety Guide
Sparklers are the most accessible firework — Category F1, legal to buy year-round, and suitable for supervised use by older children. A sparkler burns at around 1,000–1,600°C, which is hot enough to melt some metals. Most sparkler injuries happen because people underestimate this level of heat, so basic precautions reduce the risk.
Before You Light
Use sparklers outdoors only. Have a bucket of water or sand ready for spent sparklers — never drop them on the ground. Wear gloves if you have them, particularly in cold weather when reduced feeling in fingers increases the risk of burns. Keep a gap of at least an arm's length between each person holding a sparkler.
Children and Sparklers
The legal age to purchase sparklers is 18, but supervised use by older children (typically 5 and above) is common practice. Young children should always be directly supervised by an adult — not just watched from across the garden. Never give sparklers to a child under five. Once a sparkler goes out, it remains extremely hot for several minutes; make sure children place spent sparklers straight into the water bucket rather than dropping them.
After the Display
Collect all spent sparkler wires and dispose of them in the water bucket. Leave them to soak for at least 30 minutes before putting them in the bin. Check the ground around the display area for any dropped sparklers before letting children or pets back into the space.
For indoor sparkler-style effects, ice fountains are the correct product — they burn at a much lower temperature and are designed for use on tables, cakes, and inside venues.
Sparklers for Events and Organised Displays
Sparklers work well beyond back-garden celebrations too. Event planners, wedding coordinators, and corporate event organisers regularly use them as part of larger displays. Sparklers work well as a crowd-participation element because guests hold them, wave them, and create their own part of the display — unlike aerial fireworks where the audience watches from a fixed position.
For organised events, buying in bulk is the practical approach. Our bulk sparkler packs run from 40 to 1,500 units with volume discounts of up to 68% off RRP. A wedding with 100 guests typically requires 200 sparklers (at two per guest), while a corporate bonfire night with 500 attendees needs 500–1,000 units. We supply those quantities with delivery direct to venues.
For professional event displays, sparklers work well alongside a main display of cakes, rockets, and roman candles. Hand them out during the interval or as a finale activity. Giant 18-inch sparklers are the better choice for events because their 60–90 second burn time allows all guests to light and hold a sparkler together, whereas 10-inch sparklers may burn out before the last row is lit.
If you are organising an event and need advice on quantities, timing, or product selection, call us on 01709 769 184 or email help@galacticfireworks.co.uk. We have supplied sparklers for weddings, festivals, charity events, and Bonfire Night displays since 1999.
How Do Sparklers Work?
A sparkler consists of a thin metal wire — usually steel — coated in a dried paste containing three key ingredients: a metal fuel, an oxidiser, and a binder.
The metal fuel is what produces the sparks. In most sparklers, this is iron filings, steel filings, or aluminium powder. When these tiny metal particles are heated, they ignite and fly off the wire as bright, glowing sparks. The type and size of the metal particles determine the colour and character of the sparks — finer particles produce a softer, more golden shower, while coarser particles create sharper, brighter bursts.
The oxidiser — typically potassium nitrate (saltpetre) or barium nitrate — provides the oxygen needed to sustain combustion. Without it, the metal filings would not burn quickly enough to produce visible sparks. The binder, usually a starch-based compound like dextrin, holds the mixture together on the wire and controls the burn rate so the sparkler burns evenly from tip to handle rather than all at once.
Coloured sparklers add metal salts to the composition. Barium compounds produce green, strontium compounds produce red, and copper compounds produce blue. These salts emit specific wavelengths of light when heated, which is the same principle used in all coloured fireworks.
The reason sparklers produce a shower of sparks rather than a steady flame is that the metal particles are dispersed throughout the coating. As the flame front travels down the wire, it continuously ejects tiny burning particles into the air. Each spark is a small piece of metal burning briefly as it flies — which is also why sparklers are so hot and why they should always be used with care.
What types of sparklers do you sell?
We sell standard gold sparklers, coloured sparklers (red, green, blue, purple and multi-colour), giant 18" sparklers and wedding sparklers. Available individually and in bulk packs. Prices start from 89p each.
Are coloured sparklers safe?
Yes. Coloured sparklers carry the same safety rating as standard gold sparklers. They should be used outdoors, held at arm's length, and placed in a bucket of sand or water once spent. Adult supervision is required for children.
How long do sparklers burn for?
Standard 10" sparklers burn for approximately 30-40 seconds. Giant 18" sparklers — sometimes called long sparklers — burn for around 60-90 seconds, giving longer burn time for photography and events. Exact times vary by product.
Can you use sparklers at weddings?
Yes. Wedding sparklers are one of our most popular products. Giant 18" sparklers are the best choice for wedding send-offs and sparkler arches as they burn long enough for photos. Many couples buy in bulk for all guests.
Can children use sparklers?
Sparklers can be used by children with direct adult supervision. The minimum legal age to purchase sparklers is 18, but supervised use by older children (typically 5+) is common. Always have a bucket of water or sand nearby for disposal, and ensure children hold sparklers at arm's length.
Do sparklers come with free delivery?
Orders over £300 qualify for free delivery to mainland UK. Smaller orders carry a flat delivery charge. Check our delivery page for full details.
Can you buy sparklers all year round in the UK?
Yes. Unlike some fireworks that are restricted to certain dates, sparklers are classified as Category F1 and can be sold and used year-round. We keep sparklers in stock throughout the year for weddings, birthdays, New Year's Eve and any other celebration.
What size sparklers are best for weddings?
Giant 18" sparklers are the best choice for weddings. They burn for 60-90 seconds — long enough for a sparkler arch send-off and photos. Standard 10" sparklers burn out too quickly for most wedding photography. For a typical wedding of 80-100 guests, we recommend 1-2 sparklers per person.
Where can I buy sparklers near Sheffield?
We are based at 12-14 Hangsman Lane, Sheffield, S25 3PF. You can order sparklers online for delivery, or contact us to arrange collection. We stock sparklers year-round and offer bulk discounts for large orders.
How does a sparkler burn and what is inside a sparkler?
A sparkler is a thin metal wire coated in a paste made from a metal fuel, an oxidiser, and a binder. The metal fuel is usually iron, steel, or aluminium filings — these are what produce the bright sparks. The oxidiser (typically potassium nitrate or barium nitrate) provides the oxygen needed for combustion, and the binder holds everything together on the wire. When you light the tip, the oxidiser breaks down and releases oxygen, which ignites the metal filings. The tiny metal particles fly off the wire as they burn, creating the characteristic shower of sparks. Coloured sparklers use additional metal salts — for example, barium compounds for green and strontium compounds for red.
Can you have sparklers indoors?
Standard sparklers should only be used outdoors. They burn at around 1,000–1,600°C and produce hot sparks that can damage flooring, furnishings, and clothing. However, ice fountains (sometimes called indoor sparklers or cold sparklers) are specifically designed for indoor use. Ice fountains produce a controlled silver fountain effect at a much lower temperature, making them safe for use on cakes, at dining tables, and inside venues. They are popular at weddings and birthday parties. If you need a sparkler effect indoors, ice fountains are the correct product to use.
What are smokeless sparklers?
Smokeless sparklers are sparklers designed to produce minimal smoke when they burn. All sparklers produce some smoke, but smokeless versions use a cleaner-burning composition that significantly reduces it. They are particularly popular for weddings and indoor-adjacent events where heavy smoke would obscure photographs or trigger smoke detectors. Our ice fountains are among the lowest-smoke options available and are often marketed as smokeless sparklers. For outdoor use, standard sparklers produce moderate smoke that disperses quickly in open air.
What is the difference between wedding sparklers and regular sparklers?
Wedding sparklers are typically giant 18" sparklers chosen for their longer burn time of 60–90 seconds, compared to 30–40 seconds for standard 10" sparklers. The extra length gives photographers enough time to set up sparkler arch shots and capture long-exposure light trail photos. Regular sparklers are shorter and cheaper, making them practical for general celebrations like Bonfire Night and birthdays where burn time is less important. Both types carry the same F1 safety classification. For weddings, we recommend buying in bulk — typically 1–2 sparklers per guest.
