How to Plan a Gender Reveal with Fireworks

The trick is simple: get the colour right on the night without letting anyone see it in advance. Here is how our customers typically handle it.

Who holds the secret

Ask a trusted friend or family member to find out the result and place the order on your behalf. The Surprise Baby Boy and Surprise Baby Girl barrages arrive in discreet outer packaging with nothing on the box to give the colour away. The smoke grenades and Mojo cakes have their colour printed on the product itself — if you will be handling them before the day, ask your secret-keeper to wrap them in foil or swap them into a neutral box so you do not spot the colour by accident.

Daytime or evening?

Smoke grenades are built for daylight — they burn 60 to 90 seconds of thick coloured smoke that photographs and films beautifully in the afternoon. They will reveal the colour the moment you light them, so save them for the reveal moment itself rather than an opener. Mojo cakes and the Surprise Baby barrages need dusk or dark to show their colour properly — fire them from around an hour before sunset onwards, so plan an evening reveal around them.

Safety distances

F1 handheld smoke grenades have no minimum safety distance — a guest can hold them. F2 fireworks (Surprise Baby Boy and Surprise Baby Girl) need 8 metres between the firework and spectators; most UK back gardens can accommodate F2 if you light from the far end. F3 fireworks (Pink Mojo and Blue Mojo) need 25 metres — that is a large garden, a field, or a paddock. Do not try to fire F3 in a standard terraced back garden.

Securing cakes before firing

Cakes (the Mojos and Surprise Baby barrages) must be anchored before you light them. Bury the bottom third of the cake in soft ground, or stake it to a piece of decking board or a brick with heavy-duty tape or wire. An unsecured cake can tip over mid-firing and send shots horizontally — which is dangerous. Do not stand cakes in a plant pot, a bucket of sand or anything else loose; they need firm fixing.

Photography tips

Put the phone or camera on a tripod — movement ruins the shot in low light or smoke. A calm day matters more than sunshine for smoke reveals: wind disperses the plume in seconds. Golden hour (the hour before sunset) gives the warmest colour on both smoke and fireworks. Slow-motion at 120fps turns a 90-second smoke burn into a cinematic minute of footage.

Gender Reveal Fireworks — FAQs

Are gender reveal fireworks legal in the UK?

Yes. Consumer fireworks (categories F2 and F3) and smoke grenades (F1) are legal for anyone over 18 to buy and use. No licence is required. The standard curfew is 11pm on normal days. Bonfire Night, New Year's Eve, Diwali and Chinese New Year each have an extended curfew (midnight or 1am).

What gender reveal options are available?

Pink and blue F1 handheld smoke grenades (best for daytime reveals), the 25-shot Pink Mojo and Blue Mojo F3 peony cakes (big evening finale, 25m safety distance), and the F2 Surprise Baby Boy and Surprise Baby Girl barrages (evening reveal, discreet packaging, fit most gardens at 8m).

Can I use gender reveal fireworks in my garden?

Smoke grenades (F1) have no minimum safety distance. The Surprise Baby Boy and Surprise Baby Girl are F2 and need 8 metres of clearance — that fits most UK back gardens if you light from the far end. The Pink Mojo and Blue Mojo are F3 and need 25 metres, which is larger than a typical back garden — for F3 you want a paddock, a large lawn, or a field with the landowner's permission.

How do I keep the gender a secret until the reveal?

Ask a trusted friend or family member to find out the result and place the order on your behalf. The Surprise Baby Boy and Surprise Baby Girl barrages are the easiest because they arrive in discreet unbranded outer packaging — nothing on the box gives the colour away. The smoke grenades and Mojo cakes show their colour on the product itself, so if you will handle them before the day, ask your secret-keeper to wrap them in foil or move them into a neutral box.

Do smoke grenades stain clothes or surfaces?

Handheld smoke grenades can leave residue on light fabrics or pale surfaces if used at very close range. Use them outdoors, hold them at arm's length downwind, and keep guests 2-3 metres back from the plume. The smoke itself dissipates cleanly in the air.

Can I use gender reveal fireworks at a venue or public park?

On private land with the landowner's written permission, yes. Public parks, beaches and open spaces almost always prohibit fireworks — you would need the local council's permission, which is rarely granted. Smoke grenades in public spaces sit in a grey area and many councils restrict them too. Check with the venue or council before you plan the reveal.
