Fountains are the firework you light when you want something beautiful without waking the neighbours. They sit on the ground and spray sparks, crackle and colour upwards — nothing flies into the air, nothing goes bang. Just a cascade of light at close range that everyone can stand near and enjoy.

Of the 8 main types of fireworks sold in the UK, fountains are the quietest and the most garden-friendly — which is why they're often the first thing we recommend to families starting out.

Every fountain in this collection is 1.4G classified, which is the quieter classification. Most are also F2-rated (8-metre safety distance), so they'll work in a standard back garden. If you've got young kids, pets, or neighbours who aren't thrilled about fireworks, fountains are where to start.

What Do Fountain Fireworks Actually Look Like?

Think of a cone or tube on the ground shooting a spray of sparks and colour 2 to 4 metres into the air. The smaller ones — like Chunky Monkey and Laser from Brothers Pyrotechnics — give you about a minute of golden and silver showers. They're simple but they look great, especially grouped together.

The bigger fountains are where things get interesting. Krakatoa from Primed Pyrotechnics (£17.99) runs for 80 seconds with colour changes and crackle phases. Are Fountains Suitable for Small Gardens?

Most are, yes. 15 of the 21 fountains here are F2-rated with an 8-metre safety distance — that covers most suburban gardens. The remaining 6 are F3-rated (25-metre distance), which includes the larger pieces like Krakatoa and the Fountain Selection. Always check the category on the label before buying.

How Do Fountains Fit Into a Display?

Fountains are brilliant openers. Light one while people are still arriving and it sets the mood without blasting anyone's eardrums. They also work well as quiet interludes between louder cakes and barrages — a moment for people to catch their breath before the next barrage kicks in.
