Smoke Grenades vs Smoke Bombs — What Is the Difference?
Smoke grenades and smoke bombs are different names for the same type of product. In the UK, handheld pull-ring smoke devices are commonly called smoke grenades, smoke bombs or smoke flares. Our smoke grenades are F1-classified pyrotechnic devices — the lowest and safest firework category. They produce coloured smoke only, with no flames, sparks or loud bangs. The term "smoke bomb" tends to be used more casually, while "smoke grenade" refers to the pull-ring handheld format we sell here.
How to Use Smoke Grenades
Pull the ring firmly to ignite the smoke device. Hold it at arm's length or place it on the ground — the smoke will begin flowing within a few seconds. For photography, position the smoke grenade upwind of your subject so the plume drifts across the frame. Are smoke grenades legal in the UK?
Yes. Coloured smoke grenades classified as F1 fireworks are legal to purchase and use in the UK. They are not weapons or military-grade devices — they are pyrotechnic smoke effects designed for consumer use at events and photography. You must be 18 or over to buy them. There are no restrictions on when you can use F1-rated smoke devices, unlike F2–F4 fireworks which have curfew rules.
