Gender Reveal Fireworks UK: Smoke, Cakes & Planning Your Perfect Reveal

Pink and blue gender reveal fireworks at British garden party

💡 Quick answer: Gender reveal fireworks and smoke grenades are a brilliant way to share your news. For daytime reveals, use handheld smoke grenades in pink or blue (from £6.99). For evening reveals, dedicated gender reveal cakes fire vivid pink or blue effects into the night sky (from £28.99). All legal, all available year-round from licensed retailers like us.

Gender reveals have properly taken off in the UK. What started as an American trend has become a genuine tradition here - and for good reason. After months of waiting, finding out whether your baby is a boy or a girl is one of the most exciting moments of your life. Why not make that moment properly dramatic?

Fireworks and coloured smoke grenades are hands-down the most spectacular way to do it. The colour appears in the sky (or billows from your hand), everyone sees it at the same second, and the reaction is instant. No fiddly balloon popping. No cutting into a cake and squinting at the sponge. Just a vivid burst of pink or blue that nobody can miss.

But there are some real decisions to make: daytime or evening? Smoke or fireworks? Garden or open space? And what products actually exist for this? Let's go through it all.

Daytime vs Evening: Which Works Better?

This is the first decision, and it changes everything about which products you'll use.

☀️ Daytime Reveals

If your party is during the day - a barbecue, garden gathering, afternoon celebration - smoke grenades are your best option. Traditional fireworks don't show up well in daylight (the colour is washed out by the sun), but coloured smoke is vivid and dramatic in broad daylight. If you do want fireworks in your reveal rather than just smoke, our daytime fireworks range has products that work in natural light.

Pull the pin, hold the smoke grenade up, and a thick cloud of bright pink or blue smoke pours out for over 90 seconds. It looks incredible on camera, everyone can see it from a distance, and it works in any outdoor space.

⚠️ Important: Smoke staining

Coloured smoke grenades can stain clothing, surfaces and nearby objects - particularly lighter colours. Don't hold them over a white dress or near a cream tablecloth. Use them outdoors, at arm's length, and away from anything you don't want tinted pink or blue. The smoke itself disperses quickly, but the powder residue near the grenade can leave marks.

🌙 Evening Reveals

If you can time your reveal for after sunset, fireworks are spectacular. Dedicated gender reveal cakes fire vivid bursts of colour - pure pink or pure blue - high into the night sky. The effect is dramatic, emotional and impossible to miss.

Evening reveals work especially well if you're combining the gender reveal with another event - a Bonfire Night gathering, a New Year's Eve party, or a summer evening barbecue that runs into the dark.

Your Options: What's Available?

There are three main categories of product for a gender reveal. Each has different strengths.

1. Handheld Smoke Grenades (Daytime)

The most popular choice for daytime reveals. Simple to use - pull the ring, hold at arm's length, and coloured smoke pours out. No fuse, no ignition needed.

  • Blue Handheld Smoke Grenade - £6.99 (90+ seconds of vivid blue smoke)
  • Pink Handheld Smoke Grenade - £6.99 (90+ seconds of vivid pink smoke)

Both by Cube Fireworks. Category F1 (indoor/outdoor). Buy 3 for £18.

Best for: Daytime events, garden parties, photoshoots, social media content. Great photos and videos. Can be used by the parents-to-be themselves for a hands-on, personal reveal.

Practical tip: Buy two or three - one for each parent to hold, plus a spare. More smoke = more drama. They're cheap enough that an extra one is worth it for peace of mind.

2. Gender Reveal Cakes (Evening)

These are dedicated firework cakes that fire exclusively pink or exclusively blue effects. Unlike regular cakes that mix colours, every single shot is the reveal colour - so there's no ambiguity.

Garden-safe (F2, 8m distance):

  • Blue Mojo - £28.99 (rich blue peonies and mines, by Primed Pyrotechnics)
  • Pink Mojo - £28.99 (pink peony bursts, by Primed Pyrotechnics)

Display-grade (F3, 25m distance):

  • Surprise Baby Boy - £39.99 (25-shot barrage, around 30-40 seconds of vivid blue stars, by Bright Star)
  • Surprise Baby Girl - £39.99 (25-shot barrage, around 30-40 seconds of vivid pink stars, by Bright Star)

Best for: Evening events, dramatic reveals, larger gatherings. The F3 options (Surprise Baby Boy/Girl) give you a bold, sustained display that'll have the whole crowd cheering.

Which size? If you've got a decent garden (8+ metres clear space), the Mojo cakes are perfect. If you're in a field, park or large outdoor venue, the Surprise Baby range gives you bigger, bolder bursts that the whole crowd can see.

3. Combining Both (The Full Experience)

The most impressive reveals combine smoke grenades AND fireworks. Start the countdown, the parents-to-be pull the smoke grenades (daytime element, close-up, great photos), and then light the cake for the big aerial reveal. Double the drama.

For twins, this gets even more fun - one parent holds blue, the other holds pink. Or fire both a Blue Mojo and a Pink Mojo at the same time for a spectacular double reveal.

How to Plan Your Gender Reveal

A bit of planning turns a good reveal into a great one. Work through this checklist:

1. Timing

Decide daytime or evening first - this determines your product choice. If you want fireworks, you need it to be dark (or nearly dark). Smoke grenades work any time of day.

Remember the firework curfew: fireworks must stop by 11pm (midnight on Bonfire Night, 1am on New Year's Eve, Diwali and Chinese New Year). For a gender reveal, you'll be doing this well before curfew anyway.

2. Location

You need outdoor space - no exceptions for fireworks, and smoke grenades are far better outdoors too.

  • For smoke grenades (F1): Any outdoor space will do. A garden, park, beach, field
  • For F2 cakes (Blue/Pink Mojo): You need at least 8 metres of clear space between the firework and your guests
  • For F3 cakes (Surprise Baby Boy/Girl): You need at least 25 metres of clear space - this means a large garden, field or open ground

Measure it properly. 25 metres is further than most people think.

3. The Reveal Moment

Think about the choreography. Who lights the firework? Who holds the smoke grenades? Where does everyone stand? Where's the camera?

Best practice:

  • Assign one responsible adult to light the firework (not the parents - they should be watching with everyone else)
  • If using smoke grenades, the parents-to-be hold them - it makes for far better photos and a more personal moment
  • Position your camera/phone person off to the side, not directly behind the firework
  • Build the anticipation - do a countdown. "3… 2… 1…" It makes the videos so much better

4. Keeping the Secret

If the parents don't want to know until the reveal, someone else needs to buy the fireworks or smoke grenades. A trusted friend, family member, or the midwife can pass the information to whoever's doing the ordering. We're very used to getting these orders - just tell us the gender and we'll send the right colour. The outer packaging doesn't reveal the colour of the product.

Capturing the reveal on camera

The reveal lasts seconds, so the filming deserves as much thought as the firework itself. Get it wrong and you have a colour nobody caught; get it right and you have the clip that goes round the family WhatsApp for weeks.

Set up two cameras if you can. One films wide on a phone or tripod to catch the whole scene and everyone's reaction, and a second films closer on the parents-to-be. Most phones shoot slow-motion now, and a smoke reveal in slow-mo is worth the extra tap in the settings.

Mind the wind and the light. Film with the wind behind the camera so the smoke or the burst drifts across the frame rather than straight at the lens. For a daytime smoke reveal, a plain backdrop like a hedge, a fence or open sky makes the colour pop. For an evening firework, get the camera on a tripod so the low light doesn't turn the footage to mush.

Give one person the single job of filming. In the excitement everyone grabs a phone and you end up with ten shaky half-clips and no clean one. Hand the lighting to someone steady, point the cameras, and let the moment happen.

Safety Essentials

Gender reveals are celebrations - nobody wants an accident dampening the mood. Follow these rules:

  • Read the instructions on every product before the event - not five minutes before lighting it
  • Respect safety distances: 8 metres for F2, 25 metres for F3. No exceptions
  • Keep children well back from fireworks. An adult should light them, not the excited uncle who's had three beers
  • Place cakes on flat, firm ground. Use a paving slab or board underneath. Never on grass that might be uneven
  • Have water nearby - a bucket or garden hose, just in case
  • Don't return to a firework that hasn't gone off. Wait at least 15 minutes, then soak it with water
  • Be mindful of neighbours and animals. Let people nearby know in advance. Consider using low noise options if you're in a residential area
  • You must be 18+ to buy and use fireworks (except F1 items like smoke grenades, which are 16+)

What About Confetti Cannons and Other Options?

Smoke grenades and fireworks aren't the only options. Some people prefer:

  • Confetti cannons: Shoot pink or blue confetti into the air. Fun and photogenic, but can be fiddly and the cleanup is a pain - especially outdoors where confetti blows everywhere. Not great for parks or beaches (littering). Streamers are a tidier alternative
  • Balloon pops: A large black balloon filled with pink or blue confetti. Classic, but less dramatic than smoke or fireworks. Works well indoors
  • Coloured powder: Throw pink or blue powder into the air. Very photogenic but extremely messy - it stains everything. Best reserved for outdoor photoshoots where everyone's wearing clothes they don't mind ruining

For sheer visual impact and that "gasp" moment from the crowd, fireworks and smoke grenades are hard to beat. They're also self-contained - no cleanup of confetti or powder afterwards (beyond the firework debris, which you should always pick up).

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I buy gender reveal fireworks all year round?

Yes - from a licensed retailer like Galactic Fireworks, you can buy any fireworks at any time of year. You don't need to wait for Bonfire Night season. We deliver nationwide.

Can I use smoke grenades indoors?

Technically some smoke grenades are rated F1 (indoor use), but we'd strongly advise using them outdoors. The smoke is thick, it can set off smoke alarms, and the residue can stain surfaces. Outdoors is always the better option.

What if I'm having twins?

Buy one of each colour! Fire them simultaneously - either two smoke grenades or two cakes. It's twice the drama and makes for incredible photos.

Do the products arrive in discreet packaging?

The outer packaging doesn't reveal the colour of the product inside. If you're trying to keep it a surprise from the parents-to-be, have a friend order and store them.

How much should I budget?

A simple smoke grenade reveal: around £7 - £14 (one or two smoke grenades). A firework reveal: £29 - £40 for a single cake. The full experience (smoke + firework): around £36 - £54. Not bad for one of the most memorable moments of your life.
