What Makes a Great Bonfire Night Display?

A good display has variety. You want a mix of effects – colourful breaks from cakes and barrages, the drama of rockets soaring overhead, and ground-level pieces like fountains and wheels to keep things interesting between the big shots. Think about your audience too: if young children are watching, start with something gentle before building to the louder finale pieces.

If you're not sure where to start, our display kits bundle together a balanced selection of fireworks that work well as a complete show. For more experienced displayers, pick individual cakes, rockets, and barrages to build a custom programme.

Planning Your 5th November Display

Give yourself plenty of time to plan. Work out your budget, measure your garden or firing site, and check the minimum safety distances on each firework before you buy. We list the safety distance clearly on every product page. If your space is limited, stick to Category F2 and smaller F3 fireworks – they're designed for closer-range viewing and still deliver brilliant effects.

Best fireworks for Bonfire Night 2026 – FAQs

What are the best fireworks for Bonfire Night 2026?

The best Bonfire Night fireworks combine a mix of scale and effect. For a balanced 2026 display, pair a 25–50 shot cake like Break The Bank, Poker Face or Thunder Bolt with a high-shot-count barrage such as the 300-shot Gatling Barrage for a finale, a rocket pack like Space X or Moonshot for height, and a box of 18″ Mammoth Sparklers for the crowd. Our best-selling bonfire-night line this year leans towards Primed Pyrotechnics, Bright Star and Cube Fireworks compound pieces – see the comparison table above for the full top ten.

How many fireworks do I need for a Bonfire Night display?

Plan on roughly 15–20 minutes of fireworks for a garden gathering of 10–20 people. That translates to around 8–12 individual pieces – typically three or four multi-shot cakes (each running 20–45 seconds), a rocket pack, one or two fountains or wheels for ground-level variety, and a barrage to finish. A £150–£200 budget will comfortably build this; £300+ pushes you into territory where you can add a 300-shot compound for the finale. Our complete display kits bundle a balanced programme if you'd rather not pick piece by piece.

What time can I let off fireworks on Bonfire Night?

England, Wales and Scotland: Under the Fireworks Regulations 2004, fireworks may be used until midnight on 5 November (rather than the usual 11 pm curfew). Outside Bonfire Night the curfew reverts to 11 pm, except on New Year's Eve, Diwali and Chinese New Year, when it extends to 1 am. It's illegal to set off fireworks between midnight and 7 am on any other date. Scotland additionally restricts supply under the Fireworks and Pyrotechnic Articles (Scotland) Act 2022 – check local Firework Control Zones if you live in Edinburgh, Glasgow or Dundee.

Northern Ireland: different regime. Adult (F2/F3) fireworks may only be bought, possessed or used under a licence from the Department of Justice (NI). The curfew rules under the Fireworks (NI) Order 2002 apply once a licence is granted – in practice, private displays in NI are highly restricted. Your council may also enforce tighter local rules anywhere in the UK, so check before a big display.

What are the safest fireworks for Bonfire Night?

The safest Bonfire Night fireworks for garden use are Category F2 pieces, which need only 8 metres of spectator distance. That covers most of our multi-shot cakes, smaller rockets and all of our fountains, wheels and sparklers. Category F3 pieces are more powerful and need 25 metres – only choose these if you have the room. Our low noise range is the safest option for households with pets, young children or neighbours likely to be disturbed by noise. Every product page lists the NEC (net explosive content), category and safety distance clearly.

Do I need a licence for a Bonfire Night display?

England, Scotland and Wales: no licence is required for a private Bonfire Night display on your own property using Category F2 or F3 consumer fireworks bought legally – you need only be 18 or over and follow the safety distances on each product. A licence is required for a paid professional display using Category F4 fireworks (not sold to the public). Ticketed events should confirm their position with the local authority and an insurer; a public-liability policy is sensible for anything beyond a family gathering.

Northern Ireland: the rules are stricter and separate. Under the Fireworks (NI) Order 2002 you need a licence from the Department of Justice NI to buy, possess or use any Category F2 or F3 firework – including for a private Bonfire Night display. F1 fireworks (such as indoor sparklers and ice fountains) are exempt. We ship to mainland Great Britain only and are not currently able to deliver fireworks to Northern Ireland addresses; if you're based in NI, please source from a locally-licensed NI retailer.
